How To: Check an Overheating Engine

It’s a warm, beautiful Washington Summer day. You are driving down the interstate, singing along with your favorite song with not a worry in the world when all of a sudden you see clouds of smoke leaking out from under the hood. You start to panic and wonder what is going on while you begin to merge across the lanes of traffic to a safe zone on the side of the interstate. Here are a few tips for you to do when you see that your car engine is overheating:

1.) If the A/C is on, turn it off and roll down the windows. Also, turn the heater on at full blast, this may help prevent complete engine overheating.

3.) Next, turn off your car and pop the hood. Make sure to check the temperature of the hood before completely opening it. If you see smoke coming from under the hood, wait until the hood cools and then open it.

4.) Once the engine has cooled down completely and you can touch it comfortably, check the coolant reservoir tank. To open the radiator cap simply twist it off, but make sure to pay special attention to the radiator and coolant level. If it doesn’t have any coolant, you’ll have to add coolant or water directly into the radiator.

5.) Finally, restart the car and check the temperature gauges on the dash. If the needle starts moving into the red zone, shut the engine off immediately, wait a few minutes and try again.

So even though the first day of Spring has come and gone and we are onto the first day of Summer, it still seems to be raining cats and dogs. Here are a few helpful tips for driving in these raining days.

Check the wiper blades:
Now is also the time to inspect your wiper blades and replace them if necessary.

Check the headlights:
Inspect both the high and low beams. Also, take a moment and check your turn signals ensure all bulbs are working correctly.

Check the tires:
Put a penny in-between the tire tread… if you can see the top of Lincoln’s head you need new tires.

Check the brakes:
You can check these to make sure they are working properly by tapping them lightly. Never slam on the brakes while driving in the rain or on wet roads.

Check the weather:
Tune your car radio in to your local news station for the latest weather reports and updates on road closings, flash flood areas, accidents, flooded roadways and mud slides.

One of our co-owners, Susan, has been a puppy raiser for Canine Companions for Independence for a few years. When I was a physical therapy patient, I first met Jaker, a yellow lab. He was a service dog in training helping patients through difficult rehab. I can remember stroking his head as he would visit on the side of the treatment table. Now, almost 2 years later, I will be a puppy raiser too. Actually, Susan and I will be co-raising a puppy.

We recently found out our puppy’s name is Kline. Once you hear the puppy’s name; the reality sets in that yes, the puppy is really ours. We will meet Kline for the first time May 13th. I am very excited and even though Susan has been through this 3 other times, she is just as excited. We have been watching him via webcam and have determined he is quite the boy. I am sure he will entertain our patients with his antics. This should be an interesting experience. So, stay tuned for Kline and his adventures.

5 things to check when your car won’t start

we have all been in the situation where we wake up at 5:00 am on a rainy, windy morning and we go out to our car and it won’t start. We go into a panic and don’t know what to do. Well here are a few tips for you to do before you go and spend money on getting your car towed.

5 things to check when your car won’t start:

1.) Check to make sure you have the right key in the ignition. I know it sounds silly, but it can and has happened.

2.) Check to make sure your vehicle is in park before you turn the key over.

3.) Check to make sure that you have enough gas to operate the vehicle.

4.) Check to make sure your battery cables have not come loose. Also, check the battery posts and make sure they aren’t corroded.

5.) Check the ignition switch, it may be worn out.

I read in an Atlanta Journal-Constitution article Forget rehab, try Nintendo “Wiihab”. The article states that Nintendo’s Wii video game system is becoming the craze in rehab therapy for patients recovering from strokes, broken bones, surgery and even combat injuries.
Using the game console’s unique, motion-sensitive controller, Wii games require body movements similar to traditional therapy exercises. patients become so engrossed mentally; they are almost oblivious to the physical rigor. Many hospitals and physical therapy clinics are using this as a tool in their treatment programs to motivate patients to exercise.

The Wii has been used effectively for many of our patients and they often look forward to it. I remember one patient reporting how sore he was the next day. That was not our intention, but certainly shows that the body gets a good workout.

If you don’t already have a Nintendo Wii, take the plunge and enjoy it as part of your regular exercise program. You can’t go wrong with FUN!
